There are meetings that are not held for pleasure, but out of a strict need for survival. And what happened this Tuesday in the Legislative Palace was exactly that. Yamandú Orsi, in a movement that makes it clear that the government is not navigating calm waters, appeared before the bench of senators of the Frente Amplio. The objective was as urgent as it was uncomfortable: to provide explanations for a series of decisions that have the party internally in a constant and dangerous boil.
There was no complimentary coffee or smiles for the photo. The atmosphere was thick, loaded with those silences that in politics are worth a thousand speeches. The president, who arrived with the natural wear and tear of someone who feels they are losing control of the story, had to face the long faces and incisive questions of a bench that, far from being a block of iron, is beginning to show important cracks.
A president on the defensive
The internal crisis is not new, but the fact that Orsi had to go down to Parliament to “get in touch” with his senators marks a turning point. The president, often criticized for his erratic style and that “spontaneity” that generates so much noise in the most orthodox ranks of his party, tried to justify the current course. But the technical explanation was not enough.
In the corridors of the Senate, rumors about a “decoupling” between the Presidency and the legislators are already an open secret. Some senators – who months ago defended him tooth and nail – today prefer to look the other way. What was seen yesterday was a desperate attempt by a leader to remind them that, although the helm is difficult to steer, the ship is the same for everyone. But the question that remains is whether that authority is still recognized or whether the Frente Amplio has simply begun to let go of its grip.
The internal one: a powder keg that never rests
Orsi's problem is that his style not only irritates the opposition; It's starting to tire them out. While the president tries to pull the strings of a government that does not seem to find a clear direction—between van controversies, out-of-place statements, and a management that is perceived at times to be light—his senators see how their own political capital is eroding day by day.
The meeting did not serve to heal wounds. On the contrary, it made it clear that the ideological and strategic differences within the FA are deeper than the leadership is willing to admit. The discomfort is palpable. There are legislators who feel ignored, others who fear being dragged into the abyss by decisions they do not share, and a president who seems to speak in a language that his own caucus no longer understands, or worse, no longer wants to speak.
A government that is beginning to show its seams
After this meeting, the feeling that remains in the atmosphere is one of fragility. A government that needs to sit and give constant explanations to its own legislators is a government that has lost the initiative. The internal crisis is no longer a “management” problem, it is a problem of political survival.
Can Orsi regain command? The next few days will be decisive. What is clear is that the bench's patience has a limit, and that limit seems to be getting closer. In politics, when the leader has to ask for explicit support from his troops, it is because the support, in reality, has already ended. And in that scenario, the applause of commitment is of no use to govern.
