The early afternoon hours in the Old City were shaken by an operational deployment that altered the usual appearance of the port promenade. After noon this Friday, an alert notice mobilized the authorities towards the end of the coast of Montevideo, where the presence in the Sarandí breakwater body of a lifeless man trapped between stone blocks. The particular characteristics of the scene and the condition of the body forced the authorities to immediately rule out the possibility of accidental drowning.
The personnel of the Investigations Division of the National Naval Prefecture (Divin) assumed leadership of the procedure at the scene. Upon approaching the water break, the technical personnel confirmed that the human remains had their feet firmly tied, an unequivocal criminalistic indication that directed the proceedings under the strict line of an intentional homicide. Due to the complexity of the slippery terrain, urgent support was requested from a team of the Fire Department, whose members actively collaborated with ropes and stretchers to rescue the body from among the rocks without altering the possible evidence.
The sources linked to the case preliminarily confirmed that the organic remains show a state of decomposition that allows them to affirm that the death did not occur recently. The forensic experts who worked under the Montevideo drizzle analyzed whether the body was dragged by the current of the Río de la Plata until it became stranded on the concrete blocks or if the location of the discovery coincides with the geographic space where the crime was carried out.
The intervention of the Prosecutor's Office and the expertise in Ciudad Vieja
The coastal environment, usually frequented by artisanal fishermen and people who go out for a walk, was perimetered with preservation tape while researchers collected footprints and fingerprints.
The case fell under the orbit of the 10th Shift Flagrancy Prosecutor's Office, whose senior officer ordered the immediate transfer of the remains to the judicial morgue to perform the corresponding autopsy.
Medical examiners will have the key task of determining the identity of the deceased through DNA comparisons or fingerprint records, as well as establishing with scientific precision the biological cause of death and the number of days that the body remained submerged in the waters of the River Plate. Neighbors and regular attendees of the area looked in amazement at the movement of the police trucks from the railing of the boulevard. Until now, the authorities maintain strict secrecy regarding the complaints of homelessness that have been active in recent months, seeking to cross-reference data that will clarify the mystery surrounding the appearance of a tied body on the Sarandí breakwater, on a gray day that put naval security on high alert.
