The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, expressed his satisfaction this Friday with the extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, which was agreed last week. In this context, he urged all parties to cease attacks and for the Israeli Army to completely withdraw from Lebanese territory.
A truce that brings hope
Guterres highlighted the three-week extension of the truce, noting that it is an opportunity to promote dialogue between both countries. His spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, reported that the Secretary General hopes that this agreement will contribute to lasting peace in the region.
US support in the process
The UN leader also praised the role of the United States Government in facilitating this agreement. He reaffirmed the UN's support for all efforts that seek to end hostilities and alleviate the suffering of communities on both sides of the border.
A call to responsibility
Guterres urged all actors involved to respect the ceasefire and comply with their obligations under International Law. In particular, he called on Israel to completely withdraw its forces and on Hezbollah to respect the authority of the Lebanese Government.
The situation in Lebanon
However, the situation remains tense. This Friday, at least two people were killed in a new attack by the Israeli Army in southern Lebanon, which targeted Hezbollah infrastructure. Since the beginning of this offensive on March 2, nearly 2,500 people have lost their lives in the country.
