Donald Trump on Cuba: US President Donald Trump, once again shook the regional geopolitical board with blunt statements about the future of the island. During an interview on Hugh Hewitt's program, the US president analyzed the critical situation that the Caribbean country is going through and was forceful regarding the limits of diplomacy and economic sanctions: "I don't think much more pressure can be exerted except to enter and destroy the place," he stated.
For Trump, the survival of the Cuban regime was historically tied to its relationship with Caracas, ensuring that "the life of Cuba is Venezuela", due to the constant flow of oil and financial resources that arrived from Venezuelan territory. In his view, Cuba has been a failed nation for the last quarter of a century and the current system has collapsed, plunging the population into deep suffering.
The Venezuela factor and the fall of Maduro
Trump's statements come in a context of maximum tension after the recent capture of Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, a fact that, according to the White House, changes the rules of the game for its allies in the region. The president announced that the US government will talk about Cuba “very soon” and stressed his intention to “help the Cuban people” and those who are in exile
For his part, the Secretary of StateMarco Rubio reinforced this position with direct warnings towards Havana. Rubio described the Cuban leaders as “senile incompetent” and assured that the regime should be extremely worried after the fall of Maduro. The head of US diplomacy highlighted that Venezuela's internal security apparatus was under Cuban control, which link directly both political destinies
Military strategy and legal pressure
While the statements get louder, The United States has already begun to mobilize resources in the Caribbean. Recent reports indicate the movement of ships towards the north of the island, in a maneuver that combines military pressure with the legal strategy that ended Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, transferred to New York to face charges of drug trafficking and conspiracy. This scenario leaves the Cuban government in a position of unprecedented isolation and under the direct gaze of a Trump administration that seems willing to do anything to force a regime change in the hemisphere
