The United States and China alert their citizens in Mali due to the offensive of Tuaregs and jihadists

The United States Embassy in Mali has urged its citizens to seek immediate shelter after the detection of explosions at the Bamako airport, within the framework of a major offensive launched by Tuaregs and jihadists against the Malian military junta. This call came on the morning of Saturday, April 25, when explosions were reported near the Modibo Keita International Airport and in the city of Kati, according to a statement issued by the Embassy. In this context, US authorities recommended their citizens stay at home and avoid traveling to these areas until more information about the situation is available.

The alert issued by the United States was quickly seconded by the Netherlands Foreign Ministry, indicating the beginning of international reactions to the offensive that has led to a general mobilization of the Malian Army in several cities, including Kidal, Gao and Kati. In its statement, the Chinese diplomatic mission urged citizens to avoid traveling to Mali and those who are already in the country to take extreme precautions, be aware of the security situation and limit their departures to strictly necessary cases. This call is significant given that China has significant economic interests in Mali, particularly in the lithium sector, where projects such as the Goulamina mine highlight its growing strategic importance in the industry.
