The United States Embassy in Mali has urged its citizens to seek immediate shelter after the detection of explosions at the Bamako airport, within the framework of a major offensive launched by Tuaregs and jihadists against the Malian military junta. This call came on the morning of Saturday, April 25, when explosions were reported near the Modibo Keita International Airport and in the city of Kati, according to a statement issued by the Embassy. In this context, US authorities recommended their citizens stay at home and avoid traveling to these areas until more information about the situation is available.
The alert issued by the United States was quickly seconded by the Netherlands Foreign Ministry, indicating the beginning of international reactions to the offensive that has led to a general mobilization of the Malian Army in several cities, including Kidal, Gao and Kati. Although the General Staff of the Malian Army later reported that the situation was "under control," the United States Government expressed its strongest condemnation of what they consider one of the most serious attacks that the Malian Army has suffered in the last decade. In a statement, the US State Department's Bureau of African Affairs condemned the terrorist attack and offered its condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming the United States' commitment to supporting efforts to promote peace and stability in Mali and its region.
For its part, the Chinese Embassy in Mali also issued a notice to its citizens, using language similar to that of the American Embassy. In its statement, the Chinese diplomatic mission urged citizens to avoid traveling to Mali and those who are already in the country to take extreme precautions, be aware of the security situation and limit their departures to strictly necessary cases. This call is significant given that China has significant economic interests in Mali, particularly in the lithium sector, where projects such as the Goulamina mine highlight its growing strategic importance in the industry.
The security situation in Mali has been a topic of constant concern, especially following the arrival of Russian-linked forces that have replaced French troops in the country. This change has highlighted the fragility of the global landscape, where powers such as the United States, China and Russia compete for influence in strategic regions. The offensive by the Tuaregs and jihadists not only represents a challenge for the Malian government, but also highlights the existing tensions in a country that has faced multiple security crises in recent years. The international community is closely watching developments in Mali, as the country's stability has broader implications for the Sahel region and global security.
