Official visit of Taiwan to Eswatini
The president of Taiwan, Lai Ching Te, arrived in Eswatini this Sunday on an official visit that marks 58 years of diplomatic relations between both countries. During his stay, Lai participated in a military welcome ceremony and met King Mswati III, who received him with honors. The Taiwanese president expressed his gratitude for Eswatini's constant support for Taiwan in the international arena.
At the meeting, Lai congratulated the king on his 58th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his accession to the throne. This gesture symbolizes the closeness between both territories, which have maintained diplomatic ties since 1965. “The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign State and belongs to the world,” said Lai, underlining the importance of Taiwan being able to contribute without obstacles to the international community.
Bilateral cooperation and development agreements
Lai's visit also had a strong economic component. Together with King Mswati III, he signed a joint communiqué and a customs mutual assistance agreement. This agreement seeks to streamline trade exchanges between Taiwan and Eswatini, thus facilitating the expansion of companies from both countries. “We will simplify trade procedures,” the president highlighted, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Lai highlighted progress in various areas such as food security, vocational training and female empowerment. He mentioned specific examples of collaboration, such as the joint production of guavas, dragon fruit, strawberries and tilapia, as well as the presence of Eswatin products in Taiwan. “These exchanges are proof of the interconnection between our peoples,” he said, adding that both nations are “truly one family.”
Lai's agenda in Eswatini includes visits to projects that reflect the results of this bilateral cooperation. Taiwan has maintained formal diplomatic relations with Eswatini, one of the few countries that officially recognize Taipei in the face of China's claims. Over the years, both partners have developed joint programs in sectors such as agriculture, health and education, consolidating a strategic alliance at the international level.
Lai's visit comes in a global context where diplomatic relations are increasingly complex, especially with regard to China's influence in Africa. Taiwan's presence on the mainland has received attention, and its relationship with Eswatini is presented as an example of successful cooperation amid a challenging environment.
Lai Ching Te will continue his visit to Eswatini, where it is expected that ties between both countries will deepen. The Taiwanese delegation has brought with it “the sincere blessings of the people of Taiwan,” in its own words, reflecting the desire to further strengthen the friendship and collaboration between the two nations.
The relationship between Taiwan and Eswatini is not only based on diplomacy, but also on a mutual commitment to the development and well-being of their people. Both countries have shown that, despite the difficulties, it is possible to build a joint future based on cooperation and mutual respect.
Lai Ching Te is in Eswatini to reinforce the strategic alliance they have cultivated for almost six decades.
