Extreme violence in Bolivia: two police officers shot during an operation in Santa Cruz to free routes

The black smoke from the burning tires merged with the gray sky of Santa Cruz, marking the pulse of a day that left Bolivia in suspense. What was presented as a tactical maneuver to free the department's strategic routes ended in an armed confrontation that hits squarely at the beginning of President Rodrigo Paz's administration. An anti-riot contingent tried to advance on the barricades, but was met with a volley of gunfire that forced the uniformed officers to seek shelter under fire.

The balance is critical: two police officers remain urgently hospitalized after receiving gunshot wounds to their legs. The ambush, carried out from the bushes lining the road, was surgical. The protesters, hidden behind a dense screen of smoke, used war weapons to stop the advance of the State, revealing the firepower of the groups that today challenge the authority of the new government.

The route to the capital of Santa Cruz, the nerve center of the country's economic engine, has been blocked for four days. The claims, which range between sectoral demands and political demands against the Rodrigo Paz administration, have escalated to a level of hostility not seen in years. While heavy-duty trucks remain stranded and shortages begin to be felt in local markets, the currency in negotiations seems to have shifted from words to bullets.

From the Government Palace, the response from Rodrigo Paz's entourage was blunt. The Executive sent elite reinforcements from La Paz with strict orders to regain control of the critical points and arrest those responsible for the ambush. For the president's team, this is not just another protest: it is a litmus test of the State's ability to impose order against organizations that have chosen the path of force.

An institutional challenge for the new mandate

The business chambers did not take long to raise their voices. In Santa Cruz, the agro-export sector warned that every hour of blockade bleeds the country's foreign exchange reserves. The crisis comes to President Rodrigo Paz at a time when economic stability is his most urgent campaign promise, and each confrontation in the east seems to erode the room for maneuver that the president needs to implement his reforms.

As the sun sets in Santa Cruz, tension persists on the ground. The question floating in the air is whether the government will be able to deactivate this powder keg through dialogue or if, on the contrary, confrontation will be the hallmark of this new stage in Bolivian history. For now, the barricades remain standing and the wounded police officers are the bitter symbol of a conflict that threatens to overwhelm the entire region.
