In the warehouses of the Northern Horticultural Central (CHN), the atmosphere is not that of a government office, but rather that of wooden crates, the aroma of humid earth and the noise of trucks that arrive before dawn. This is where the Departmental Government of Salto set its sights on closing a circuit that, until now, used to be longer and less efficient: buying food for municipal canteens directly from those who produce and sell it in the department.

The confirmation came this week, after a tour of the headquarters' positions. It is not just an administrative announcement; It is a change in the purchasing logic of a municipality that manages a critical food demand. From now on, the chain is shortened: fruits, vegetables and eggs will leave the Horticultural Central to feed the hundreds of Salteños who depend daily on the dining services of the local administration.

A tour between producers

The director of Social Development, Facundo Marziotte, walked the corridors of the CHN alongside the delegate of the departmental government in the governance of the central, Martín de Abreu. The intention was clear from the beginning: that the State's numbers feed the home economy.

In the stalls, producers not only see one more customer, but also an opportunity for stability. For those who work the land on the outskirts of the city, dealing with middlemen is usually a constant fight for cents that are lost along the way. By eliminating unnecessary links, the Municipality ensures freshness for its dishes and a fair price that remains in the hands of Salta.

Impact on the table and the local economy

The initiative touches on two sensitive points of the administration: efficient public spending and the quality of food. Municipal soup kitchens are not a minor service; They are the breadwinner of many families who find their main dish of the day there.

  • Guaranteed quality: By buying at the headquarters, you are guaranteed that the product is seasonal, fresh and with less storage and transportation time.

  • Circulating money: Local purchasing acts as a direct stimulus. What is paid in the dining room returns to the workers in the department's horticultural sector, generating a multiplier effect.

  • Integrated logistics: The governance of the CHN now becomes a strategic ally for the Municipality, allowing an articulation that should have occurred a long time ago.

For the dining room user, this means that the tomato, lettuce or egg that reaches the plate comes from a producer who knows the terrain. It is, in essence, returning to the roots of a city that is defined, to a large extent, by what it is capable of cultivating.

The departmental administration thus seeks to ensure that the Northern Horticultural Center is not only a wholesale sales hub, but also an engine of social development. The acid test will be continuity: keeping these circuits working when market prices fluctuate. For now, the step has been taken and, among the drawers of Salta producers, the measure is received with the relief of those who finally see real support for their daily efforts.
