Last Monday, in the town of Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil, a celebration that should have been a cause for joy turned into a scene of horror and sadness. Nájylla Duenas Nascimento, 34, was shot dead by her husband, Daniel Barbosa Marinho, 55, during their wedding party. The couple had formalized their union just a few hours earlier in a civil ceremony.
A day that should have been unforgettable
The day began with the civil wedding in the morning and continued with a party in the evening. However, what should have been a day of happiness turned into a nightmare. According to local media, an intense argument between Nájylla and Daniel broke out in the middle of the celebration. The conflict escalated until the man, a municipal guard, used his service weapon to shoot his wife.
After the initial shots, Daniel momentarily left the scene, only to return and continue the attack. Nájylla was seriously injured and taken to hospital, where unfortunately she did not survive the injuries that included three gunshot wounds to the chest, two to the left forearm and one to the right little finger.
Witnesses to a family tragedy
Nájylla's three children, the result of a previous relationship, were present at the scene of the events: a 15-year-old teenager and two girls, ages 12 and 8. The children witnessed the brutal murder of their mother, an event that will undoubtedly mark their lives forever.
During the inspection of the crime scene, the police seized 11 shell casings, three intact cartridges and four deformed projectiles. According to the Military Police officer in charge, the presence of intact cartridges could suggest malfunctions in the weapon used by Marinho.
A history of violence and ignored warnings
Rosilaine Alves Duenas, the victim's mother, revealed that she had already warned her daughter about Marinho's violent behavior, especially when he consumed alcohol. Despite the warnings, Nájylla, in love, chose to continue the relationship and marry him. According to Rosilaine, the municipal guard had a history of violence, information that now takes on tragic weight.
Legal consequences and search for justice
Daniel Barbosa Marinho, with 22 years of service in the Municipal Police, surrendered to the authorities a few hours after committing the murder. Now he faces charges of aggravated femicide, considering premeditation and the use of his service weapon in the attack. The sentences could range between 20 and 40 years in prison.
The case has shocked the Campinas community and has reignited the debate about gender violence in Brazil, where femicides continue to be an alarming problem. Organizations defending women's rights demand justice and more effective measures to prevent domestic violence.
The tragedy of Nájylla Duenas Nascimento is a painful reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of domestic and gender-based violence, ensuring that warnings and histories of violence are not ignored in the future.
