The Romanian authorities reported this Saturday about the fall of drone remains in their territory, the result of a night attack carried out by Russia against infrastructure in Ukraine, near the common border. This incident, although it left minor material damage, did not cause any casualties.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the fragments were located in the town of Galati, located in the southeast of the country. The damage includes an electrical pole and a structure attached to a home. Initial assessments indicate that the damage is “not significant” and that no injuries have been reported.

Details of the attack and Romanian government response

The Government of Romania has explained that the Russian attacks were aimed at civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukrainian territory, especially in Tulcea county, which is close to the river border. In this context, Romania's surveillance systems detected aerial activity near national airspace.

An official statement issued on social networks indicates that "the radars of the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) detected drones flying near Romanian airspace." In response, two British Air Force 'Eurofighter Typhoon' fighters, which are part of NATO's Reinforced Air Policing mission, took off from the Fetesti base around 02:00 (local time).

Activation of alert and citizen response measures

The Romanian authorities also activated alert protocols for the population. "The National Military Command Center notified the establishment of measures to alert the population, and a RO-ALERT message was transmitted at 02:14," they reported. This notice was sent to nearby towns such as Grindu and Isaccea.

During the episode, a British fighter managed to establish radar contact with one of the drones a short distance from the Ukrainian city of Reni, where several explosions were reported in the same area. A few minutes later, residents of Galati alerted emergency services about the fall of an "object" in the region.

As a precautionary measure, intervention teams and explosives specialists traveled to the site, where they found drone fragments in several points, which are currently in the custody of security forces.

Reactions to the incident

The Romanian Ministry of Defense strongly condemned what happened, noting that "the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation represent a new challenge for regional security and stability in the Black Sea area." In this sense, he warned that these events show a lack of respect for the norms of International Law and put at risk not only the security of Romanian citizens, but also the collective security of NATO.

Although drone debris has been reported to fall on Romanian territory on previous occasions, Bucharest has highlighted that this incident marks one of the first cases in which material damage has been confirmed.

Regional context and security

This event occurs in a context of growing tension in the Black Sea region, where Russian military operations have increased in recent months. Romanian authorities have expressed concern about the implications of these attacks on national and regional security, urging greater cooperation with NATO to ensure the defense of air and land space.

Romania, as a member of NATO, has been a strategic country in European defense and has intensified its efforts to strengthen its response capacity against possible threats. The activation of NATO fighters upon the detection of drones in its airspace is a clear indication of the seriousness with which the country takes these incidents.

Conclusions and next steps

The situation in Romania highlights the risks faced by the region in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As attacks continue, the need to strengthen security and defense measures becomes increasingly urgent. The Romanian authorities have expressed their commitment to continue evaluating the situation and keeping the population informed about any developments related to security in their territory.

In summary, the incident that occurred this Saturday is a reminder of the current tensions in the region and the importance of international cooperation to confront the challenges posed by Russian aggression. Romania will continue to work in coordination with its NATO allies to safeguard the security of its citizens and the stability of the region.
