In the age of social media, virtual interactions can generate unexpected and sometimes controversial repercussions. This was demonstrated on May 3, when a simple emoji used by Marcos Galperin, founder of Mercado Libre, unleashed a storm of criticism and debate in Argentina. It all started with the viralization of a video from Todo Noticias, where a retiree recounted the difficulties of covering her basic expenses with her pension. The situation, which reflects a broader social problem, captured the attention of thousands of Internet users and became a hot topic in the digital sphere.
A video that reflects a social reality
The video in question showed an older woman explaining that, despite having a pension, she could not afford the monthly expenses without the help of her children. The retiree highlighted that the high cost of medications was a critical factor in her economic situation. Furthermore, he revealed that he had never had a formal job, since he had dedicated himself to household chores, an unpaid but vital job for the support of many families.
Mati Smith's account (@Trumperizar) on the social network The publication generated a flurry of reactions, adding thousands of views in a short time.
The emoji that ignited the controversy
In this context, Marcos Galperin decided to intervene with a comment that consisted only of a “smiley face” emoji (😂). This response, although apparently harmless, was interpreted by many as a mockery of the woman in the video and the economic situation faced by retirees in Argentina. Galperin's response did not go unnoticed, accumulating thousands of interactions and becoming one of the most discussed topics of the day.
Coscu's response and the defense of unpaid work
Among the critical responses, that of the popular streamer Coscu, whose real name is Martín Pérez Disalvo, stood out. Coscu, known for his influence in the digital sphere, used his platforms to question Galperin's attitude. In a tweet addressed to the businessman, Coscu expressed: "But as one of the people with the most money in the country, you are going to laugh at a retiree? Those were other times, perhaps back then she supported a family as a housewife..."
Coscu's message not only reflected the indignation of many, but also put the value of unpaid domestic work, historically performed by many women, at the center of the debate. This perspective resonated strongly with his followers, accumulating more than 29 thousand likes and hundreds of responses.
A debate that transcends the digital sphere
The discussion did not end there. Coscu continued his criticism with a second tweet that cited Galperin's original publication, saying: "When they ask you if money gives you happiness, remember this example: The richest person in our country laughing at a retiree who can't afford medicine." This comment deepened the debate about the role of the rich in society and empathy towards vulnerable sectors.
Despite the intensity of the exchange, Galperin did not make additional statements or respond publicly to the questions. However, the episode served to demonstrate social sensitivity regarding the treatment and recognition of older adults, especially in a context of economic crisis and loss of purchasing power.
The crossover between Galperin and Coscu highlighted how social media can act as catalysts for broader debates about social justice and the value of unrecognized work. In a society where digital media is a platform for the expression of diverse voices, these types of exchanges can lead to deeper reflection on the economic and social dynamics that affect the most vulnerable.
