The National Party and the Colorado Party agreed that “the judicialized events must have clear political consequences, regardless of party color.”
For their part, those close to the mayor maintain that the man “collaborated with Justice” and that “he did not directly participate in the attempted robbery,” although they acknowledged that he was part of the planning with his partner. Context of the case and judicial history
The episode occurred in the early morning of Saturday, September 28, when the Jump Police thwarted an attempted robbery at a private party in the Hippodrome area. The criminals had arrived from Montevideo, presumably alerted about the event and with information about the money raised. During the operation they seized firearms, ammunition and cell phones that were analyzed by the Scientific Police.
According to the investigation, the mayor — who had a romantic relationship with the main organizer of the assault — would have facilitated the group's logistics, including contact with accomplices and information about the location of the event. Prosecutor Loreley Escobar explained that “coordination was evident and the group's intention was to commit robbery with the use of weapons, which aggravates the responsibility of those involved.”
Institutional impact and call for transparency
The case reopened the debate on ethical controls within departmental governments. Several councilors from different parties raised the need to establish stricter protocols to prevent situations that compromise the institutional image of elected officials.
Political scientist Juan Andrés Pignataro pointed out that this episode “highlights a recurring problem in Uruguayan politics: the lack of effective filters in some sectors of departmental representation, where personal ties often take precedence over the credentials or background of the candidates.”
In the judicial sphere, the prosecutor's office valued the joint work with the Salto Police Headquarters, highlighting that "the rapid action made it possible to avoid a violent crime and achieve the conviction of all those involved in a reasonable time."
The conviction of the mayor of the Frente Amplio of Salto thus closes a case that highlighted the limits between public function and individual criminal responsibility. Pending the Court's final resolution, the episode leaves a clear message about the importance of transparency, accountability and the ethical commitment of those who represent citizens.
