The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued an alert this Friday regarding the "rapid and dangerous" growth of militarism in Japan, warning that this trend represents a palpable threat to international security.
The spokesperson for Chinese diplomacy, Guo Jiakun, made these statements during a press conference in which he was consulted about the recent defense and security initiatives promoted by Tokyo, which have generated concern in Beijing.
Guo recalled that, in the past, Japanese militarism was linked to "horrendous crimes," which included creating fictitious external threats, inciting nationalism, manipulating state power, and declaring wars of aggression against other countries, resulting in catastrophes for the people of the Asia-Pacific region.
In this context, he criticized that Japan has not carried out a deep reflection on its historical legacy. According to the spokesperson, conservative sectors in Japan are constantly promoting a shift towards security policies that are "more offensive and expansionist", with the aim of accelerating the country's militarization by reconfiguring its defense industry.
The Foreign Ministry also accused Tokyo of trying to "confuse right with wrong" through its political and diplomatic initiatives. Among the measures that Beijing has indicated is the proposal to reform the Japanese pacifist Constitution, the relaxation of rules on the export of weapons, the deployment of offensive missile capabilities and a notable increase in military spending. These actions, according to Guo, show the intention to "pave the way for military expansion."
The spokesperson also highlighted Japan's approach to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), interpreting it as an attempt to involve external actors in the region and foster confrontational dynamics.
Finally, Guo warned that the historical consequences of Japanese militarism are still present and urged countries in the region, including China, to prevent its resurgence. In his words, it is essential to prevent "the tragedies of history from being repeated" and that "no one or any force undermines peace in the region."
