Peruvian deputy Guillermo Bermejo has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for terrorism crimes due to his links with the Maoist guerrilla Sendero Luminoso. The sentence also implies that Bermejo will be disqualified for a period of up to two years after the end of his sentence.
The Prosecutor's Office has managed to impose an effective sentence of 15 years in prison against the congressman for the crime of affiliation to terrorism, according to an announcement by the Public Ministry of Peru on its account on the social network X.
Bermejo has been found guilty of having held meetings with leaders of the armed group during 2008 and 2009. In addition, he is accused of disseminating “subversive ideological material” and participating in other activities linked to the guerrilla.
Likewise, the sentence forces Bermejo to pay compensation of 100,000 soles, equivalent to approximately 25,000 euros, to the Peruvian State, in addition to a fine of 7,800 soles, which corresponds to approximately 2,000 euros. The Congress of Peru has received notification of the sentence, which implies that it must proceed with his disqualification.
The deputy's defense has already announced its intention to present an appeal for annulment with the aim of avoiding a prison sentence, which could keep Bermejo in jail until 2040.
