Yellow warning in Uruguay: thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds

by August 31, 2025

The Uruguayan Meteorological Institute issued a yellow-level warning this Sunday for occasionally strong storms and heavy rains affecting much of the country. The warning went into effect at 6:15 a.m. on August 31, 2025, and was updated at 9:15 a.m. the same day. The report indicates that an atmospheric disturbance associated with a humid and unstable air mass is generating favorable conditions for the formation of storms in several departments. According to the agency, the areas under the warning may experience episodes of intense electrical activity, significant accumulations of rainfall in short periods, occasional hail, and strong wind gusts . It also warns that temporary improvements may occur during the warning period, but the phenomenon will continue to be monitored to report possible changes in its evolution.

The phenomenon directly affects the departments of Artigas, Paysandú, Río Negro, Salto, Soriano, and Tacuarembó, with the entire jurisdiction included in the warning. In the case of Colonia, the towns under alert are Agraciada, Campana, Carmelo, Cerro Carmelo, Florencio Sánchez, and Ombúes de Lavalle. In Durazno, the warning applies to Baygorria; in Flores, to Andresito and Ismael Cortinas; and in Rivera, to Masoller. The statement also mentions the towns of Arerunguá, Piedra Sola, and Tambores in Tacuarembó.

Meteorologists note that the combination of warm, humid air and atmospheric instability increases the possibility of severe weather in specific areas. Although the warning remains at yellow, the probability of severe storms is greater than 75%, requiring extreme caution in the designated areas.

INUMET recommends the public stay informed through official channels and follow basic safety measures in the event of thunderstorms. It is suggested that people avoid outdoor activities during periods of greatest instability, stay away from trees and metal structures, and avoid standing in waterways. It is also advisable to secure loose objects that could be blown away by gusts of wind.

The phenomenon can lead to accumulated rainfall in very short periods of time, increasing the risk of temporary flooding in urban and rural areas. Local authorities are alert to potential complications and urge residents to exercise extreme caution when driving. The warning will remain in effect while the indicated conditions persist, and further updates will be issued if the weather situation changes.
