The Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology issued this Sunday a yellow level warning for occasionally strong storms and abundant rains that affect a large part of the country. The warning went into effect at 6:15 on August 31, 2025 and was updated at 9:15 on the same day. The report indicates that an atmospheric disturbance associated with a humid and unstable air mass generates favorable conditions for the formation of storms in several departments. According to the agency, in the areas under warning there may be episodes of intense electrical activity, significant accumulations of rain in short periods, occasional hail and strong wind gusts. In addition, it is noted that temporary improvements could occur during the period of validity, but the phenomenon will continue to be monitored to report possible changes in its evolution.
The phenomenon directly affects the departments of Artigas, Paysandú, Río Negro, Salto, Soriano and Tacuarembó, where the entire jurisdiction is included in the warning. In the case of Colonia, the towns under alert are Agraciada, Campana, Carmelo, Cerro Carmelo, Florencio Sánchez and Ombúes de Lavalle. In Durazno, the warning applies to Baygorria; in Flores, for Andresito and Ismael Cortinas; and in Rivera for Masoller. The statement also mentions the towns of Arerunguá, Piedra Sola and Tambores in Tacuarembó.
The meteorologists point out that the combination of warm and humid air with atmospheric instability increases the possibility of severe phenomena in specific strips of the territory. Although the warning remains at the yellow level, the probability of strong storms is greater than 75%, which forces to extreme precautions in the indicated areas.
INUMET recommends that the population stay informed through the channels and follow basic safety measures in cases of thunderstorms. It is suggested to avoid outdoor activities during times of greatest instability, stay away from trees and metal structures, and do not stay in water courses. Likewise, it is advisable to secure loose objects that can be displaced by gusts of wind.
The phenomenon can lead to accumulated rain in very short periods, which increases the risk of temporary flooding in urban and rural areas. Local authorities are attentive to possible complications and call on citizens to take extreme precautions when traveling. The warning will remain in force as long as the indicated conditions persist and new updates will be issued if the meteorological scenario changes.
