Violence in Lebanon intensifies despite efforts to maintain a ceasefire. At least six people have lost their lives and more than 20 have been injured after new bombings by the Israeli Army, which attacked several towns in the south of the country, including Yohmor el Chafiq, a strategic place in the region, where most of the victims were recorded. This escalation of hostilities comes at a critical moment, as attempts are made to maintain the extended truce that had begun on April 17, but accusations of violations by both sides generate a climate of uncertainty.

Deadly explosions in Yohmor el Chafiq

Four deaths were confirmed in the town of Yohmor el Chafiq, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The Israeli strikes targeted a van and a motorcycle in the area, demonstrating the ability of Israeli aviation to hit specific targets in the region. This area is notable as it is considered the only one north of the Litani River that is still in the Israeli buffer zone and has not been occupied by the Israeli military. The choice of these targets suggests a deliberate strategy on the part of the Israeli Army in its fight against Hezbollah, a movement that maintains a strong presence in southern Lebanon.

Exchange of accusations and ceasefire violations

In the midst of this escalation, the Israeli Army has denounced that Hezbollah has violated the ceasefire by firing shots into northern Israel. According to a military statement, one of the projectiles was intercepted, while another hit an uninhabited area, which, according to Israel, represents a clear violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement. In response to the attacks, the Israel Defense Forces have reportedly stepped up their artillery in towns such as Qantara, Taybé and Beit Lif. The Israeli authorities justify these operations as part of their right to self-defense against provocations by the Shiite group.

Combat operations in the context of a ceasefire

Israel's military actions are taking place in a complicated climate, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a firm attack on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. Despite the extension of the ceasefire, political and military pressure to take action against the group has led to various reactions from the Israeli cabinet. The focus appears to be on targets that Israel says are used for military operations by Hezbollah. This contrasts with recent diplomatic efforts that have sought to establish a definitive cessation of hostilities with the support of international mediators, including the US administration, which has advocated for a longer truce.

An overview of losses and international reactions

The current conflict has already exacted a heavy human toll, with devastating figures reflecting the seriousness of the situation in Lebanon. Since the offensive began on March 2, at least 2,496 deaths and more than 7,700 injuries have been reported, according to indicators from the Lebanese Ministry of Health. This cycle of violence, which began after the attack on Hezbollah in retaliation for the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, continues to escalate, while international actors continue to watch the development of the crisis with concern. As the conflict worsens, the interventions of actors such as Iran and the United States add additional complexity to the situation, keeping the region in constant tension that makes it difficult to find a peaceful solution. The lack of trust between the parties and the continuity of clashes suggest that the path to lasting peace is still far from being reached.
