Metsul warns of an unusual anticyclone that will impact Uruguay.

by August 28, 2025

The Brazilian Metsul observatory has warned of the formation of an anticyclone considered unusual and exceptional in the South Atlantic. Projections indicate that the high-pressure system could reach temperatures close to 1050 hPa in early September, an extraordinary figure compared to the usual records of between 1015 and 1035 hPa in the region. Meteorologists warn that this phenomenon, of rare intensity, could significantly alter the behavior of the climate in the Southern Cone.

Impact on Uruguay and the region

According to Metsul, the presence of this high-pressure center in the South Atlantic will create a marked contrast with the cyclone located over Argentine territory. This pressure gradient could produce sustained winds in eastern Argentina, Uruguay, and Rio Grande do Sul, although extreme gusts are not expected, as in previous episodes.

Conditions expected for Uruguay

The anticyclone will bring atmospheric stability and a low probability of rain to Uruguay. A dry period is anticipated, with clear skies and lower humidity, conditions that may favor outdoor activities but, at the same time, pose risks due to the lack of precipitation.

Regional context

Experts emphasize that phenomena of this magnitude are exceptional in the South Atlantic. The combination of high pressure in the ocean and cyclone systems on land reinforces wind circulation, which can lead to significant variations in temperature and humidity in countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, and Brazil.
