Unemployment claims in the United States reached a total of 224,000 last week, a decrease of 3,000 compared to the previous figure, according to data released Thursday by the Department of Labor.
Recipients of this benefit totaled 1.953 million in the week ending August 2, a decrease of 15,000 compared to 1.968 million in the previous seven days. In the same comparable period in 2024, the number of beneficiaries stood at 1.863 million.
The largest increases were in Texas (1,002), New Jersey (942), Connecticut (555), Oregon (488), and Pennsylvania (445). In contrast, the steepest declines were in New York (-1,017), California (-924), Kansas (-506), Georgia (-375), and Louisiana (-341).
The highest rates of unemployment aid were in New Jersey (2.7%); Puerto Rico (2.6%); Rhode Island (2.5%); California, Massachusetts, and Minnesota (2.2%); the District of Columbia and Washington (2.1%); and Connecticut, Oregon, and Pennsylvania (1.9%).
