American tennis player Venus Williams, winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles, will compete at the 45-year-old US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season and held on hard courts from August 24 to September 7, thanks to a wild card from the organizers.
"Venus Williams, one of the sport's most legendary players, returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center as a wild card for the 2025 U.S. Open," the U.S. Open organizers announced in a statement.
The Californian tennis player has twice won the final major of the season in the singles category, in 2000 and 2001. Her last participation was in 2023 and her last victory in Flushing Meadows dates back to 2019, when she reached the second round after eliminating China's Zheng Saisai, later falling to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
The elder Williams sister returned to the tour at the Washington tournament last July after a 16-month hiatus, winning her first match in two years, defeating compatriot Peyton Stearns in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). She also competed at the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati, losing 6-4 to Spaniard Jessica Bouzas.
In addition to the singles draw, Williams is also scheduled to participate in the new mixed doubles draw, partnering with compatriot Reilly Opelka.
