US President Donald Trump on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, after she was accused of manipulating banking information to access two mortgages on favorable terms.
According to Bloomberg, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte has urged State Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Cook for "falsifying bank documents and property records to obtain more favorable mortgage terms" for two properties in Michigan and Georgia.
Although neither Bondi's office, the Fed, nor Cook herself have commented on the matter, Trump has already called on "Truth Social" for the governor's immediate resignation, in line with his attacks on Fed chairman Jerome Powell for his reluctance to lower interest rates.
Cook was appointed to her current role by former President Joe Biden in January 2022, making her the first Black woman to serve on the Fed's governing body.
In this regard, Trump has also recently attacked other figures linked to the Democratic Party, such as California Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
If Cook ends up resigning from his term, which expires in 2038, the Republican president would have a clear path to appoint a member more inclined to his views on cutting the price of money, especially with the race to succeed Powell already underway.
