The Guipuzcoan company Wavegarden has opened its first surf park in the United States, Atlantic Park, operated by the American firm Beach Street Development. Located in an urban setting in Virginia Beach, the Wavegarden Cove technology-powered surf lagoon opened to the public on August 16.
“Virginia Beach is the perfect place to launch our first Wavegarden Cove in the United States,” explained Fernando Odriozola, CCO of Wavegarden, who noted that “it has a strong surfing community and a high volume of visitors, and the only thing missing was good waves.”
The facility features "a 46-module Wavegarden Cove capable of generating up to 1,000 waves per hour and a Wave Menu with more than 25 different wave types," the Basque company explained.
East Coast pro surfers Cam Richards, Michael Dunphy, Mason Barnes, and Blayr Barton have all tested the facilities. "The problem of inconsistent surfing conditions on the East Coast has just been solved," Richards emphasized.
Atlantic Park Surf's 55-minute sessions will be available year-round, with schedules varying seasonally, and up to 40 people can surf simultaneously per session.
Wavegarden currently has 12 operating facilities worldwide, with two more soon to open in the United States under the same developer, Beach Street Development. DSRT Surf in Palm Desert, California, is scheduled to open in 2026, and HTX Surf in Houston, Texas, is currently under development.
