MADRID, 19 (EUROPA PRESS)

FCC, in consortium with the US company Halmar, has been awarded a contract valued at $1.972 billion (€1.7 billion) in the United States to build tunnels for an extension of the New York subway.

This was announced by the state's governor, Kathy Hochul, following the approval of the contract by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which will give both companies four years to complete the project.

This new contract for the Spanish company comes just two weeks after winning a similar contract in Canada, this time to build a tunnel for the Toronto subway for €875 million .

In New York, FCC will help expand the Second Avenue Line, specifically between 96th and 125th Streets, which will provide new transportation access to the East Harlem neighborhood.

To achieve this, a 6.7-meter-diameter, 750-ton tunnel-boring machine will be used. Initial work will begin this year, with civil construction work expected next year, and excavation expected to begin in 2027.

Kathy Hochul recalled that East Harlem had been waiting for these new subway stations for almost 100 years. The project was approved in 1948, but the outbreak of the Korean War halted it. Work was later resumed, even beginning construction, but was abandoned in 1975 due to an economic recession in the city resulting from the 1973 oil crisis.
