The United States announced this Sunday that it has reached an agreement with Russia to provide "robust security guarantees" to Ukraine in the event of a hypothetical peace agreement with Moscow, and that it would grant the country a protected status very similar to what it would receive if it were a NATO member.
White House special envoy Steve Witkoff explained to Fox News that "the United States is potentially prepared to provide Article 5-level security guarantees, but not from NATO, but directly from the United States and other European countries."
NATO's Article 5, it should be recalled, establishes a principle of collective defense, which implies that any attack against one NATO member country represents an attack against the rest and would entail the beginning of talks to organize a joint counterattack.
Speaking to CNN, Witkoff also confirmed that he had obtained from Russia a guarantee of "legislative endorsement in the Russian Federation" that he would "not attack any other territory when the peace agreement is codified, and legislative endorsement in the Russian Federation that he would not attack any other country."
