The family of a British aid worker who died in a Russian attack in eastern Ukraine last June said Friday that they are in "bureaucratic limbo" amid complications in recovering her body from the Ukrainian front.
Annie Lewis Marffy, 69, traveled to Ukraine in late May with a car loaded with supplies from her home near the city of Exeter to the Kramatorsk region as part of a humanitarian campaign organized by Aid Ukraine, a UK-based NGO.
The person she was traveling with, a former military officer, returned to Poland after falling seriously ill, although she continued on to Kramatorsk despite suggestions that she could deliver the humanitarian aid in Lviv. The last contact with the worker occurred on June 10, according to the NGO.
A recent report by the Kramatorsk police states that Marffy suffered "injuries incompatible with life" after a Russian drone attack between June 11 and 12, according to the British broadcaster BBC.
The worker's family, who has explored other options to recover the body, has reported that they have contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs numerous times to obtain a death certificate, but all to no avail.
