An oil refinery in Russia's Samara region was targeted early Friday morning by a bombing attack that, according to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, caused "fires and explosions" at the facility, although local authorities have ruled out any significant damage.
The refinery is located near the city of Syzran and is "one of the largest in the Rosneft system," the Ukrainian Army explained, also reporting that the plant helps supply Russian forces by producing various types of fuel, including aviation fuel.
The regional government has acknowledged the attack but has sought to minimize its impact, asserting that the flames are now under control and that "significant material damage" has been avoided. In a social media post, it clarified that the safety of the area's population is guaranteed.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that last night, defense systems intercepted seven drones in the Samara region alone, while more than 50 were shot down across the country, mainly in areas near the border with Ukraine.
