At least five people have died and around twenty others have been injured in a new attack carried out early Monday morning by Russian forces against the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, located in the east of the country.
The town's mayor, Igor Terezhov, stated in a message posted on his Telegram account that among the five fatalities is a one-and-a-half-year-old girl. He also added that twenty people have already been injured and have had to be treated by emergency services.
"Today is a day of mourning in Kharkiv. Five people have died," he asserted, calling the attack a "terrorist act." "These are the consequences of this attack," he explained, adding that the target was a "residential building."
In this regard, he offered his "deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all the victims," as stated in the statement. "Kharkov remembers each of the victims and will remain standing," he concluded.
For their part, security forces have warned that several people may still be trapped under the rubble, so search and rescue efforts continue.
