The UK government has decided to expand its training program for Ukrainian soldiers in a new effort to help Kyiv strengthen its military as discussions continue between Ukrainian, European, and US authorities over security guarantees linked to a possible peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
"In the face of continued Russian attacks, we must put the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the strongest possible position. And as the push for peace continues, we must make the Ukrainians the strongest possible deterrent to securing that future peace," argued British Defense Secretary John Healey, in statements reported by the Boomberg news agency.
Thus, according to the Ministry of Defense, the Interflex program—focused on combat and leadership training—will remain active until at least the end of 2026, so that "Ukraine can defend itself today and deter tomorrow. We will continue to intensify our support alongside our allies," Healey insisted.
A "Coalition of the Willing" led by the United Kingdom and France has outlined plans to send a multinational military force have participated in the meetings held in , with contributions from nearly 30 countries.
The first stage of this project involves strengthening the Ukrainian army through additional training and reinforcement support, Bloomberg reported this week. These troops would be supported by a multinational force, composed primarily of European troops, which would be stationed in remote areas of Ukraine .
The plan also includes a possible U.S.-provided "containment barrier," which would include intelligence sharing, border surveillance, arms supplies , and possibly air defense systems.
In total, since the start of the Interflex program, more than 50,000 Ukrainian recruits have been trained on British soil, according to data from the country's government.
