The Russian government is not currently planning a hypothetical peace summit between President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, waiting for both sides to finalize the points to be discussed, a scenario that is still a distant prospect.
On August 18, following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump met with Zelensky and several European leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine, during which he called Putin to try to arrange a trilateral meeting.
"Putin will be ready to meet with Zelensky when the issues are ready to be discussed at a summit, and these issues are not ready at all," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in excerpts from an NBC interview that will air in full next Sunday.
However, Lavrov reiterated that the Russian president "has made it clear" that he is willing to meet "as long as this meeting truly has a presidential agenda."
Lavrov, on the other hand, recalled this Friday that Russia intends to remain "flexible" regarding several of the proposals made by US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine during the summit held last week in Alaska.
"President Trump has proposed several issues, and on some of them, we are willing to show greater flexibility," the Russian foreign minister asserted.
