Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has avoided speculating about the possible outcomes of Friday's meeting in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, noting that Moscow is entering the meeting with "a clear and defined position."
"We're not jumping the gun," said Lavrov, who, along with the defense and finance ministers, is part of the main delegation participating in this unprecedented summit, focused on a possible peace horizon for Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Minister hopes the meeting will serve to continue making "useful" progress on a path toward understanding that has already begun with visits to Moscow by White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, according to statements released by the Ministry.
Friday's meeting, convened at a military base in Alaska's main city, Anchorage, will be the first face-to-face meeting between Putin and Trump since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The White House said the meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. local time (9:00 p.m. CET in Spain).
According to the Kremlin, Trump and Putin will first hold a face-to-face meeting, followed by a broader meeting between the delegations. At the end of the summit, the two leaders are scheduled to appear at a joint press conference.
