Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that, given Russia's repeated "betrayals" and ongoing diplomatic efforts, he can only expect the Russian military to "increase pressure and attacks" on Ukrainian targets in the coming days, with the aim of giving President Vladimir Putin a "more favorable" political position.
Zelensky discussed the situation on the front lines with senior military commanders this Saturday, hours after the conclusion of the summit in Alaska between Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, an unprecedented event since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
kyiv is aware of "movements and preparations" by Russian troops, after the Russian Armed Forces have attempted to gain ground in eastern Ukraine in recent days, even breaking through the last lines of defense.
Zelensky, who acknowledged "extremely difficult" situations in several parts of the Donetsk region, warned that Ukrainian forces reserve the right to "counterattack," "if necessary, in an asymmetric manner."
The Alaska summit between Trump and Putin ended without any agreements regarding the conflict, and in fact, the US president has once again qualified his position, stating that he no longer sees the need for a ceasefire, instead opting to "directly" negotiate a peace agreement.
The Ukrainian government has not directly commented on this apparent shift, and Zelensky, who spoke with Trump in the early hours of the morning for over an hour, has simply stated on social media that the positions of all parties are "clear."
"We must achieve real peace, one that is lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions," he demanded.
