US President Donald Trump expressed "surprise" that Brazil's Supreme Court decided by a majority on Thursday to convict former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of attempted coup d'état.
"I saw the trial. I know (Bolsonaro) quite well. He was a foreign leader, a good president of Brazil, and I found it very surprising that this happened," he told the media as he left the White House for New York.
Trump compared Bolsonaro's case to his own experience with the American justice system: "It's very similar to what they tried to do to me, but they didn't get away with it. All I can say is that I knew him as president of Brazil, and he was a good man," he added.
Following his comments, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that "the United States will respond appropriately to this witch hunt." "The persecution of sanctioned human rights violator Alexandre de Moraes continues, as he and other members of the Supreme Court have unjustly decided to imprison Bolsonaro," he said via X, referring to the judge presiding over the case.
Bolsonaro became the first former Brazilian president to be convicted on Thursday of attempted coup d'état, in connection with a plot to remain in power after the 2022 presidential elections, which saw Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva win.
In addition, the Supreme Court has convicted seven other defendants who are also central to the aforementioned plot. The high court now enters the sentencing phase for each of them.
