Tottenham manager Thomas Frank took the positives from the penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the European Super Cup final, especially showing they can "compete against any team in the world" after nearly beating "the best."
"I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best right now. We had them right where we wanted them for about 80 minutes until we were 2-1 up, and then, of course, the pace changed a bit," he said on TNT Sports, hoping to quickly put the disappointment behind us and get the Premier League off to a good start.
The Danish coach made his official debut with the London side on the brink of a historic title for Spurs, with a 2-0 lead five minutes from time. "The team, the players, the club, the fans—there are many reasons to be happy. It's like a coin toss when it goes to a penalty shootout," he said.
"We showed that we can adapt and be pragmatic, and we needed to be that way against a team like PSG. The way we defended, with high pressure and low defense, was excellent, almost perfect, and our set pieces were also very good and dangerous. At times, I think we showed we can play against any team in the world. That's one positive thing I'm taking away from this," he added.
Frank emphasized the importance of set pieces and expressed confidence in the arrival of new signings. "It's key. It should be a weapon for any team. We'll focus on it because I think it's a key aspect. We'd like to strengthen the squad. We're working very hard to see if we can achieve that. Overall, I'm very happy with the squad, but in any transfer window, we try to see if we can strengthen it before it closes," he stated.
