U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday halted the issuance of work permits for foreign commercial truck drivers, claiming they pose a "danger" to the lives of Americans.
"Effective immediately, we are suspending the issuance of work visas for commercial truck drivers," he announced on his X social media account.
The US Secretary of State justified this decision by warning that "the growing number of foreign drivers driving large tractor-trailer trucks on US roads is endangering American lives and undermining the livelihoods of American truckers."
The White House issued an executive order in late April stipulating English proficiency as a "non-negotiable safety requirement" for professional drivers, arguing that it "is common sense" and lamenting that "this requirement has not been enforced for years, and American roads have become less safe."
