Canada will lift retaliatory tariffs on a long list of U.S. imports as a gesture of goodwill toward the Trump administration, Bloomberg reported.
Sources consulted by the outlet have indicated that Mark Carney's administration will make the announcement this Friday and will eliminate the 25% tariff on U.S. goods that meet the standards of the tripartite free trade agreement (USMCA), signed by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
However, Ottawa will likely maintain the 25% tariffs on its southern neighbor's steel and aluminum, as well as its automobiles. US President Donald Trump also penalizes foreign purchases of these products.
The measure also aims to pave the way for the USMCA review, which is expected to begin in the coming months. People familiar with the matter explained that these tariff reductions are intended to emphasize the importance of the agreement to Canada.
"He's eliminating his retaliatory tariffs, which I thought was very good. And we'll have another call soon. Yes, we had a very positive call," Trump explained today from the Oval Office, referring to the previous call between the two leaders.
On the other hand, the Republican has defended the convenience of his tariff program because it makes "everyone respect" the United States and because it will allow him to raise $4 trillion (€3.41 trillion) in revenue to reduce the deficit.
