The United Nations-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared famine in Gaza Governorate, located in the central and northern parts of the Strip, on Friday.
The Famine Review Commission has noted in a report that the established parameters are being met and that the territory is in Phase 5 of the classification.
It also warns that these same levels could be exceeded in the coming weeks in areas of the Palestinian enclave, such as Deir al-Bala and Khan Yunis, according to the document, which points to "catastrophic" levels of food insecurity as the Israeli offensive progresses, leaving more than 62,100 dead in less than two years.
