The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday authorized the Donald Trump administration to cut nearly $800 million (€690 million) in funding for health research, including HIV and suicide prevention programs, in its attempt to dismantle the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program.

In a 5-4 decision, the court lifted a Boston judge's order blocking $783 million (€675 million) in cuts to the National Institutes of Health, accusing it of acting "arbitrarily and capriciously" to align itself with the US president's priorities.

The court held that the judge lacked jurisdiction to order the reinstatement of specific grants, although it left open the possibility that grant recipients could sue in a different federal court to recover the improperly withheld funds.

The case stems from an executive order Trump signed during the first days of his second term, in January 2025, requiring agencies to terminate grants or contracts that "promote gender ideology" or "immoral preferences based on race, sex, gender identity, sexual preference, or religion."
