The Texas House of Representatives approved the electoral map on Wednesday, which the Republican Party hopes to use to gain up to five additional seats in the 2026 elections, sending the bill to the Senate for final approval.
The new redistricting process passed with 88 votes in favor and 52 against, in a House session that followed the return of Democratic congressmen earlier this week, who had fled the state to prevent what they considered a "corrupt" vote, in the words of their leader, Gene Wu, who has already announced that they will take the initiative to court.
"Maybe they don't see gerrymandering. Maybe they don't see redistricting. But I hope they see lying, deceit, and stealing. Because this is what people do, people like (US President) Donald Trump. People like the Texas Republican Party. When they can't win, they cheat," he said Wednesday, referring to a bill that must be approved by the Senate before being signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
The Democratic congressmen returned to this special session accompanied by a Department of Homeland Security agent, a measure imposed by Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows to ensure a quorum for the controversial vote. This measure was adopted shortly after the civil arrest warrants signed by Burrows himself against the "fugitives" proved unenforceable outside the state.
