Pope Leo XIV has sent a clear message to the European People's Party (EPP), urging that the people be the central axis of their policies. During his speech, the Pontiff underlined the need to address ideologies and warned of the growing dangers of populism and elitism, emphasizing that European policy must address the root causes of migration with a humane and realistic approach.

The Pope criticizes populism and elitism

In his speech, the Pope warned about the risks posed by populism, which seeks quick solutions and easy consensus, and elitism, which operates without real social support. Leo XIV proposed a genuinely 'popular' policy, based on dialogue, participation and love of truth. "The very name of the European People's Party implies the responsibility of putting the people at the center of political commitment," he said.

Political priorities for Europe

Among the priorities for political action in Europe, the Pope highlighted the importance of addressing the causes of migration from a humanitarian perspective, caring for those who suffer, but recognizing the real capacities of reception and integration. In addition, he mentioned the need to guarantee decent working conditions in an increasingly dehumanizing market, as well as promote human creativity.

The Pontiff also addressed the demographic crisis and the need for responses to global challenges such as caring for the environment and the development of artificial intelligence, which presents both great opportunities and considerable risks. "Politics must be able to respond to these challenges without falling into ideologies that distort reality," he stated.

Restore the connection between citizenship and politics

Leo XIV denounced the growing disconnection between citizens and their political representatives, and stressed the need to reestablish direct and personal contact between the two. "Closeness is the best remedy against a policy that is based on shouts and slogans, incapable of addressing people's daily problems," he said.

Politics as a form of charity

The Pope concluded his speech by recalling that politics can be considered "the highest form of charity" when it is oriented toward the common good and the future, even if that means making difficult or unpopular decisions. However, he warned about the danger of ideologies, which can distort reality and subject people to artificial projects, nullifying their aspirations for freedom, happiness and well-being.

Receiving European parliamentarians

During his speech, the Pontiff welcomed the European parliamentarians who gathered in the Vatican, addressing a special greeting to the president of the EPP, Manfred Weber, and to the special envoy of the European Union for the promotion of religious freedom outside the community territory, Mairead McGuinness. Furthermore, he highlighted the influence of figures such as Adenauer, De Gasperi and Schuman, who are considered the 'founding fathers' of contemporary Europe.
