MADRID, 15 (EUROPA PRESS)

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he "would like" Israeli authorities to allow journalists into the Gaza Strip, a statement made days after the Israeli military killed six reporters in a single attack targeting a media-only tent in Gaza City, sparking widespread criticism from much of the international community.

"I would like that to happen. I wouldn't mind if journalists went (to Gaza)," he said when asked if he would pressure his Middle Eastern ally to allow journalists access to the Palestinian enclave.

The White House resident added from the Oval Office that "it's a very dangerous situation, as you know, for a journalist, but I would like it to be that way."

The Israeli army killed six journalists last Sunday, including prominent reporter Anas al-Sharif and four other colleagues from the Qatari television network Al Jazeera, who were in a media-only tent in Gaza City.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) justified this "deliberate" attack by claiming that Al-Sharif – whose work in the Gaza Strip earned him the Pulitzer Prize last year – was in fact a member of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), a claim denied by the reporter and the network and one that Israel has already used in previous bombings.

The attack took place just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had ordered the military to allow more foreign journalists access to the enclave.

Gazan authorities estimate at least 237 media professionals have been killed in Israeli attacks since the start of its military offensive in October 2023, a figure the United Nations estimates to be more than 242.
