Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday accused his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albandese, of "betraying Israel" and being "weak" for "abandoning the Jews" by preventing far-right MP Simcha Rothman from entering the country.
"History will remember Albanese for what he is: a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australian Jews," the Israeli president said in a message posted on social media.
His comments came just one day after Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced the withdrawal of visas for Australian diplomats serving with the Palestinian Authority in response to the decision against Rothman.
Canberra recently also decided to ban the entry of former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked and pro-Israel activist and influencer Hillel Fuld. The country plans to recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations next September.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has expressed her view of the visa waiver as an "unjustified" measure at a time when "dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever."
