The death toll from the bus accident that occurred this weekend in central Benin when the vehicle fell into the Ouemé River has risen to 27, while search and rescue teams continue to search for around twenty people who are missing.
On Sunday, only one body was recovered, while another 26 bodies were found on Monday. Authorities have only been able to confirm the evacuation of nine survivors, who have been hospitalized. There were 54 passengers on board the vehicle.
The bus was completely submerged at a depth of almost 15 meters, but emergency services managed to pull it out of the water during the day, according to Benin Web TV.
The accident occurred early Saturday morning near the municipality of Thio, in the province of Glazoué, requiring the deployment of "all" resources to evacuate the injured, locate the missing, and recover the vehicle.
