A 33-year-old police officer died this Sunday morning following a traffic accident in the city of Salto. The information was confirmed by the department's headquarters in an official statement.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of Pascual Harriague and Juan Etcheverry Streets. The police officer was driving a car accompanied by a 31-year-old man when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into a storm drain.

The police officer died at the scene as a result of the impact. His companion was taken in serious condition Salto Regional Hospital

The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Scientific Police, along with the on-duty prosecutor, Augusto Martinicorena, who will determine whether other factors were involved in the accident.
