Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz arrives at the start of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, which will be played on hard courts between August 24 and September 7, after winning the Cincinnati Masters 1000, which has put him in good position to regain his world ranking of number one and win three tournaments of this category in a single season for the first time in his career.
Carlos Alcaraz returned in the best possible way after the short break he took following his loss in the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner. He did so with his third Masters 1000 of the season in Cincinnati, a tournament in which he had to overcome not only the world number one but also the number three, German Alexander Zverev. All of this while improving his game and recovering the freshness that has allowed him to be the best tennis player of 2025 so far.
And Alcaraz's season is the best of his career so far. The Cincinnati title marks the first time he has reached the milestone of three Masters 1000 titles in a single year. Furthermore, the Murcian has lifted six trophies in 2025—Roland Garros, Monte Carlo, Rome, Cincinnati, Rotterdam, and Queens—matching his best record since becoming a professional in a calendar year (2023), all with three months of competition remaining, and achieving success on all surfaces (clay, grass, outdoor hard court, and indoor).
An outstanding season in which we're seeing a more mature and, above all, more consistent Carlos Alcaraz. Since the start of 2025, the El Palmar native has participated in 12 tournaments, and the Miami Masters 1000, where he fell in the second round, is the only one in which he hasn't finished among the top eight. In fact, he's already reached eight finals, the same number as in 2023, his record for a single season.
This consistency also means the Murcian's winning percentage this season is the highest of his career, at 90 percent. In fact, he has already surpassed 50 wins, something he has been doing since 2022, becoming the first to achieve this feat since Novak Djokovic between 2013 and 2016. Furthermore, the 54 match wins he will start the US Open with are the same as last year's 54-6 record.
Now, Alcaraz has several challenges ahead of him between now and the end of the year. The first is to win his second US Open title, which would allow him to win two Grand Slam titles for the second consecutive year, as well as virtually guaranteeing a year-end ranking of world number one, something he only achieved in 2022, the very year he won his only title at the New York Grand Slam.
Added to this is the possibility of improving his best record of victories at the end of the year, which has so far been set at 65 wins in 2023. To achieve this, he must add 12 more victories, a more than attainable objective considering the number of tournaments remaining in his season, including, in addition to the US Open, two Masters 1000s, the Davis Cup and the ATP Finals, for which he has already qualified and for which he has never won or played the final.
Finally, the Murcian will also have the opportunity to win his first Masters 1000 tournament—Shanghai and Paris. A challenge that, if he succeeds, would place him alongside Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Björn Borg, John McEnroe, and Ivan Lendl, the only players to have won at least four Masters 1000 tournaments in a single year.
