U.S. authorities announced Wednesday that a woman and three minors have been repatriated to Tanzania from the Al Roj displacement camp in northeastern Syria.
The State Department has expressed its gratitude to the African country's authorities for an operation they carried out on August 11 with the "assistance" of Washington, although so far there has been no confirmation from Tanzania or the Kurdish authorities, who manage these camps housing relatives of Islamic State fighters.
"The United States thanks Tanzania for working with us to repatriate its citizens, and thanks our local partners, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), for their assistance in facilitating this repatriation and their commitment to ensuring the lasting defeat of the Islamic State," the US diplomatic ministry said in a statement. It emphasized the need for countries of origin to take responsibility for their nationals in these camps as a "lasting solution to the humanitarian and security crisis" in the area and to minimize the risk of the jihadist organization resurfacing in the region.
Washington estimates that there are about 14,500 people from more than 70 countries, excluding Syria, living in the Al Hol and Roj camps, most of whom are under 12 years old.
