James Gunn 's Superman is gearing up for a digital release on Friday, and the director says there's a reason behind its quick virtual arrival.
The DCU film hit theaters on July 11, with the film out for just over a month before becoming available to buy/rent on Friday via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango Home, among other platforms. Speaking with Dogra, Gunn said the film had such a quick streaming turnaround due to the release of Peacemaker Season 2 .
“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is that it’s because of Peacemaker ,” he said when asked what drove the “mindset” to release the film on streaming, so “shortly after” Superman theatrical release.
“I originally thought Peacemaker was going to come out next month,” Gunn added. “There were a lot of things that were out of our control, so Peacemaker is coming out now, and at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that I wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker . And that’s really the reason for it.”
In Wednesday night's DCU series premiere, the showrunner told The Hollywood Reporter that her David Corenswet-directed superhero movie "leads directly into Peacemaker ," while the TV show's second season will end by "setting up the rest of the DCU."
“It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker ,” he explained. “It should be noted that this is for adults, not children, but that Superman leads into this show and then we have the creation of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker is incredibly important.”
On what to expect in season two, Gunn added: “There are a lot of guest stars coming, a lot of characters appearing that we’ve already met in Superman . I don’t think there’s anything I’ve done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker so I’m so excited for people to see it.”
John Cena, who stars in the show, reiterated Gunn’s sentiments, saying that season two “is all about furthering the narrative. Instead of standalone properties, the entire DCU is now connected, like you saw in Peacemaker Superman . I think what you’re seeing in season two is just a forward for that storytelling. That whole DCU through line — it’s taking the kids on 11th Street through their next adventure, but it’s also very much about the DCU going forward.”
