A new episode of violence against public transportation was reported in the Andresito neighborhood of Salto. A group of misfits threw rocks at municipal buses on their regular routes, resulting in the immediate suspension of service in the area.
The stone throwing caused material damage to the buses and fear among passengers. While no injuries were reported, the risk faced by drivers and commuters led the municipality to adopt a drastic measure: from now until further notice, municipal buses will not enter the neighborhood.
The decision directly impacts the daily lives of Andresito residents. Many rely on buses to get to the city center, their workplaces, high schools, or colleges. Others, especially older adults, use them to get to medical appointments or run errands. The suspension forces them to seek more expensive alternatives such as taxis or ride-hailing apps, which entails an additional expense that not everyone can afford.
The Salto City Hall reported that the measure seeks to preserve the safety of transportation workers and passengers. At the same time, it confirmed that it is working in coordination with the police to strengthen security in the neighborhood and ensure conditions that allow service to resume as soon as possible.
Residents of Andresito expressed their displeasure. Some emphasized that the suspension of service punishes the entire community for the behavior of a few. Others demanded a quick solution because the lack of municipal buses particularly affects children in school and low-income families.
The municipality will continue to assess the situation and, together with the police, will define the next steps. Meanwhile, the neighborhood remains without bus service, a measure that disrupts daily routines and highlights the need to strengthen public transportation security in Salto.
