The delegation of the Royal Spanish Canoe Federation (RFEP) has added four new medal finals on the second day of competition at the Olympic Sprint World Championships being held at Parco Idroscalo in Milan: the women's K4 500, the men's C2 500, the men's C1 200 and the K1 1000. Of the other six events in which our team competed, they made it to the semi-finals in five of them.
In the C2 500, Joan Antoni Moreno and Diego Domínguez started in the first heat, where only the winners would earn a ticket to the final, knowing how to consistently steer their boat to victory, with more than a second's lead over the German boat at the finish line. The Spanish duo, bronze medalists at the Paris Games and gold medalists at this year's World Cup in Szeged, will battle for medals in the final on Sunday, August 24, at 10:47 a.m.
In the afternoon, the first to advance to the final were the women's K4 500m. Ouzande, Val, Fernández, and Pardo won their heat and will compete for gold this Friday, starting at 3:18 p.m. Laura Pedruelo also secured a well-deserved spot in the K1 1000m final. In a tough semifinal, she broke the four-minute mark (3:58.26) to win her heat and face the best in the final this Friday, starting at 3:32 p.m.
The last to qualify for the A final was Pablo Graña in the C1 200m. He competed in a challenging semifinal, but his quality prevailed in the final meters to win his semifinal heat. He will compete for gold this Friday at 3:40 p.m.
The rest of the Spanish athletes also lived up to expectations. Victoria Yarchevska finished second in her heat of the K1 200m event, earning her place in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Nerea García, a senior World Championship debutant, secured a spot in the semifinals in the K1 200m speed event and will compete for a spot in the final from lane two of the semifinals.
Mallorcan Alex Graneri also confidently completed his heat, winning it to advance to the semifinals. In the final two races of the morning, the men's and women's K2 500 achieved their objective. Estefanía Fernández and Begoña Lazcano achieved third place in their heat, and Enrique Adán and Carlos García finished fourth, both boats advancing to the semifinals.
