MADRID, 13 (EUROPA PRESS)

Paris Saint-Germain won their first European Super Cup on Wednesday thanks to their 4-3 victory on penalties against Tottenham Hotspur, after a 2-2 draw in regular time, in a final played in Udine (Italy) and where goals from Kang-in Lee and Gonçalo Ramos for the Parisian team equaled the previous goals scored by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for the London team.

At the Stadio Friuli, Spurs controlled the opening minutes without any danger for either area, although Richarlison stole the ball in the 23rd minute in the opposition's half, combined with Mohammed Kudus and, when the ball was returned to him, executed a right-footed shot that grazed Willian Pacho, forcing Lucas Chevalier to make a good save to clear it for a corner.

The French response was a through ball for Bradley Barcola to run down the left flank, although the opposing defense closed down the space well as soon as he entered the box. Another Tottenham weapon was Kevin Danso's long throw-ins, in true Rory Delap fashion, which ended up infecting the rest of his teammates.

The strategy of sending balls from distance and extending the game with headers paid off in the 39th minute, making it 1-0. Guglielmo Vicario, the Spurs goalkeeper, curiously born in Udine, sent a free kick into the PSG box, and 'Cuti' Romero headed it in. Van de Ven jumped alongside Marquinhos, and in the commotion, João Palhinha's appearance behind him was crucial.

A collision with the PSG captain was included, but it wasn't ruled a foul by the referees. A header from Marquinhos and Van de Ven together left the ball at Palhinha's mercy; he volleyed it in the air, and a brilliant save from Chevalier only deferred the goal, as Van de Ven himself made it 1-0, capitalizing on the rebound from the crossbar.

Despite not being the theoretical favorite, from what appeared to be the final scoreline, they couldn't be considered a surprise. Luis Enrique Martínez's team lacked rhythm and almost paid dearly for it in the 45th minute when, after another series of rebounds, Danso, Richarlison, and ultimately Kudus combined three headers to hit the post.

PSG went into the locker room with that scare in their guts, but to top it all off, they started the second half terribly. It took just a minute and a half for the English side to create danger, with a powerful right-footed shot from Richarlison parried at mid-air by Chevalier. However, the action continued and Spurs forced another long-range free kick, which allowed them to repeat their plans.

Pedro Porro lofted a cross into the opposing box, and at the far post, Romero, unmarked, headed in. Gianluigi Donnarumma's replacement in the Parisian goal, who had been making such a good impression despite conceding just before halftime, tarnished his image when he missed his dive and missed the Argentine center-back's shot to make it 2-0.

Luis Enrique's men tried to respond with two chances guided by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, first with a forced shot from the byline after a triangulation by his teammates and then with a half-ball that was quickly stopped after a cross from Ousmane Dembélé. Danso's powerful header immediately followed, narrowly missing Chevalier's goal.

Fabián Ruiz's introduction in the 60th minute, replacing Kvaratskhelia, improved the mood of a PSG side that was suffering from having only had one week of training before the start of the 2025/26 season. Barcola then fired a low right-footed shot after a scuffle, but the move was ruled out for offside by Fabián Ruiz.

A little later, the Los Palacios y Villafranca midfielder created another opportunity down the right flank, which Dembélé squandered with a deflected right-footed shot from the edge of the box. Luis Enrique's other substitutions came too late, with Kang-in Lee being the most active on the right flank and taking the dangerous free kick.

On the other side, the very young Ibrahim Mbaye also stood out in a squad lacking spark to look for a comeback until Kang-in Lee, in the 85th minute, received a short pass from Vitinha on the edge of the area and made a precise left-footed cross that went into the English goal next to the base of the far post, without Vicario being able to do anything.

Encouraged, the French side sought an equalizer while Thomas Frank's men retreated, trying to secure a spoils that ultimately eluded them. Showing patience in moving his attack from one side of the field to the other, Achraf Hakimi found space on the right for a free-running Dembélé, who crossed tensely for Gonçalo Ramos to head in the 2-2.

That breathing space in extra time saved PSG, who in the subsequent penalty shootout, as there was no extra time, overturned Vitinha's miss on his first attempt. Chevalier made amends in the opponent's third attempt, saving Van de Ven's shot, and then another error by Mathys Tel condemned Spurs. Nuno Mendes converted the fifth shot, and PSG were crowned champions.
