MADRID, 19 (EUROPA PRESS)

Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shaibani discussed "various issues related to improving stability in the region and southern Syria" with an Israeli delegation in the French capital, Paris, on Tuesday, following the violence in the Suwayda governorate, which erupted due to sectarian clashes, leaving more than 1,500 dead since July.

The talks focused on de-escalation and non-interference in Syrian internal affairs, as well as strengthening stability in the region and reviving the 1974 agreement, which stipulated the creation of a demilitarized zone and which Israel declared "collapsed" after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, according to the Syrian news agency SANA.

Damascus stressed that "these talks are being held with the mediation of the United States, as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at improving security and stability in Syria and preserving its territorial integrity."

In mid-July, the Syrian transitional government announced a ceasefire in the Suwayda governorate and the deployment of its security forces to preserve the cessation of hostilities following weeks of fighting between Bedouin loyal to the Damascus authorities and militias from the Druze minority.

Adding to these clashes was the Israeli Army , which carried out several bombings against the region—and even against government offices in Damascus—claiming to be defending the Druze minority in its neighboring country.
